Abstract

|
Forty-six patients diagnosed as bronchiectasis were treated by surgical intervention in the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Chonnam University Hospital, during the recent 8 years from January, 1969 to October, 1976. The evaluation of the intervention was as follows.
1. The complication of surgical intervention was observed in 21.7%. The remained 73.2% showed marked symptom relief or complete cure:
2. In the 52. 1 % of the cases, lobectomy of the diseased lobe was carried out, and in 34.7%, lobectomy combined with segmental resection. Pneumonec tomy or thoracoplasty was done in each on case.
3. The risk of recurrence was relatively high in the cases of diffuse or bilateral lesion.
4. Postoperative reinfection of the residual lesion needed more intensive medical treatment as the surgical intervention.
